All toolsNoise Dose Calculator

One day can contain many exposures.

Combine several approximately constant sound levels and durations into one estimated NIOSH daily occupational reference dose.

Daily exposure periods

Enter each approximately constant A-weighted sound level and its duration. Periods are combined into one NIOSH occupational reference dose.

How it works

Each period uses part of the dose

The calculator finds the NIOSH reference duration for each level, divides the entered duration by that reference and adds the percentages. Read what noise dose means.

Named framework

NIOSH occupational model

The model uses 85 dBA for 8 hours and halves the reference duration for each 3 dB increase. See the NIOSH guidance.

Important limits

An estimate, not personal advice

Changing levels, impulse noise and uncertain phone readings need more context. The percentage is not a medical result or an individual safety guarantee.
